Selecting Classes? Read This First

When it comes to choosing your classes for the upcoming semester, there’s much more to consider than simply fulfilling your degree requirements. Being intentional with the courses you choose and paying attention to details when you register could help set you up for success and ensure that you sign up for the right classes for you.

Timing and Schedules

Paying close attention to class times is crucial during registration. As you begin to plan for registration, try having a weekly calendar in front of you and plugging in the courses you’re looking at. This will help you to have a visual of what your weekly schedule will look like with your chosen classes, and it could help you avoid having any overlap in class times. Also, be sure to remember to factor in transportation time when you’re scheduling. If you have to walk or drive 15 minutes from one class to another, you may want to schedule those classes with a bit more time in between.

Compatibility

While it is important to take certain classes based on subject matter, you should also consider the professor for each course, as well as the course format. Sometimes, certain professors may have teaching styles that don’t match your learning style, which may make the course more difficult. Asking other students who have had a specific professor or reading online reviews about them may help give students insight as to how a particular professor teaches. Additionally, pay attention to the format of the class – is it lecture-based or interactive? In-person, or online? For online classes, synchronous or asynchronous? Knowing your learning style may help you determine which class formats work best for you and could be very helpful when choosing classes during registration.

Personal Interests and Preferences

While it is important to ensure that you take courses that fulfill your degree requirements, you may have more options than you think to take courses that you actually enjoy. Many different college programs have general subject requirements that students could fulfill by taking a variety of specialized courses. For example, maybe you have to take a general science course to graduate, but you have no interest in traditional sciences. Your school may offer courses like astrology or bakery science that fulfill your science requirement and seem much more interesting and enjoyable. Remember, while getting your degree is the biggest priority, going to school should also be an opportunity to explore your interests and learn about different things that you truly enjoy.

The Bottom Line

Registering for classes can seem a bit hectic and overwhelming, but by keeping a few key points in mind, you may be able to map out a solid schedule and feel confident going into the upcoming semester. Be sure to pay close attention to class times and formats as you plan and do your research on the professors that you decide to take. Also, keep in mind that you may have more class options than you think, and that many schools offer cool and unique classes that you may enjoy. And remember, you don’t have to face registration alone – your academic advisor is there for guidance and support every step of the way.
