Scholarships and Loans
The best way to pay for college is with someone else's money. By combining scholarships and grants, you can minimize the amount you need to borrow.
All grants and scholarships fall into four main categories
State Sponsored Merit Scholarships
These scholarships are designed to recognize South Carolina students’ academic merits. Eligibility criteria vary, but each scholarship requires at least a 3.0 high school GPA.
- This category includes the Palmetto Fellows, LIFE and SC Hope scholarships
- Must be a South Carolina resident attending an in-state college or university
- All three scholarships are automatically applied if you meet the criteria, there is no separate application form.
Federal and State-Sponsored Grants
Grants are designed to assist students with the greatest financial needs and do not require repayment. Each grant requires annual completion of the FAFSA Form and will automatically apply if you are eligible.
- TEACH Grants fund students who agree to teach full-time for at least four years in a high-need field at a low-income school.
- Pell Grants are need-based grants for undergraduate students who haven’t earned a prior degree.
- The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is awarded by schools on a first-come, first-served basis.
- South Carolina offers two need-based grants: the South Carolina Tuition Grants and the South Carolina Need-based Grant.
School Scholarships
Each school offers its own sets of scholarships based on merit, field of study, athletic ability, and more, plus grants based on need.
- Many school scholarship applications are built into their application process, but some may require additional items, such as an essay, so check your school’s list.
- We’ve aggregated the scholarship links for South Carolina’s major colleges and universities to make it easier to find your school.
